Design and implement combat choreography for a production

Work with the director to ensure that the fight scenes are integrated seamlessly into the storytelling

Work with actors to help them learn and execute their fighting roles convincingly and safely

Understand how to stage fights so that they are safe for both the performers and the audience members

collaborate with other Fight Directors to develop new ways of staging violence onstage

Manage productions emergency medical needs during rehearsal and performance, including managing on-call medical staff during performances

Train actors in basic first aid & emergency care, as well as plastering & bandaging injuries sustained during training or performance

Ensure all weapons used onstage are safe and fit properly for each actors size & strength, adjust weaponry as needed throughout rehearsals/performances

Maintain detailed records of all safety procedures & incidents during rehearsal/performance periods

Consults with shows Director to discuss desired tone & objectives for fight scenes

Works with stage management team to devise creative solutions for managing ambitious fight scene logistics

Breaks down the script to create a "road map" of all required fight scenes, noting potential difficulties & staging challenges

Auditions & selects actors for roles which require stunt or combat skills

Holds "fight call" rehearsals with entire cast before tech week to ensure everyone is aware of choreography & safety procedures

Teaches basic stage combat techniques (this may include unarmed, single sword, rapier & dagger, smallsword, greatsword, quarterstaff, etc.) to actors without prior experience

Choreographs fight scenes using a variety of methods (including but not limited to: recorded music cues, positive reinforcement verbal commands/signals, counting cadence aloud or in their head)

calls out specific fighting moves during performances so that actors can maintain accuracy and energy onstage

ensures that understudies are familiar with all aspects of the fights they might have to perform - also serves as trainer/mentor for new understudies coming into the production later on
