A jockey is a professional horse racing rider who competes in races on horses. They are responsible for controlling the horse during the race, and must be able to make split-second decisions that can affect the outcome of the race. Jockeys must have excellent balance, strength, and agility in order to stay atop their mounts while navigating tight turns and obstacles on the track. Jockeys typically begin their careers as apprentices, learning from experienced riders how to properly care for horses before and after races. They also learn how to read a race program so they can determine which horses are most likely to win or place in a given event. During training sessions, jockeys practice riding different types of horses at various speeds so they can become familiar with each animals unique characteristics. On race day, jockeys must arrive early enough to prepare their mounts for competition by grooming them and checking their equipment such as saddles and bridles. Once at the track, they will warm up their horses before entering into the starting gate where they will wait until it is time for them to start running. During the race itself, jockeys use subtle body movements such as shifting weight or using reins to guide their mounts around obstacles or other competitors while trying not to tire out too quickly themselves. After crossing the finish line first (or second or third), jockeys dismount from their horses and return them back into stables where they receive awards based on performance results if applicable. In addition to competing in races, some jockeys may also work with trainers or owners outside of competitions by providing advice about strategies that could improve performance results during future events.
